“Harvestfest,” Downtown, Kennebunk

Sept. 29-Oct. 1, Thursday-Saturday, 8pm/Thurs, Fri, 8:30pm/Sat, 2:30pm/Thurs, 3pm/Sat, “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers,” Pull up your boots and hold onto your hats when this all-dancing, all-singing, all-new production of the rip-roarin’ musical comedy classic bursts onto the stage with rambunctious energy. This big, brawling, rollicking show is set in 1850s Oregon Territory and tells the story of Adam Pontipee and his backwoods brothers’ unusual pursuit of brides. When Adam goes to town to get a wife, he miraculously convinces Milly to marry him that same day, and she immediately starts reforming her six rowdy brothers-in-law. Sept. 30, Friday, 2pm, “Wine Walk-Wines of Piedmont, Italy,” You’re in for an incredible wine education experience. You’ll walk away with knowing a whole lot about wine, how regional influences impact wine styles and quality, gain confidence knowing how evaluate, select and pair wines and describe what you smell and taste. Oct. 1, Saturday, 8am-3pm, “HarvestFest,” The day is filled with activities for everyone. The morning will start with two annual events the town has come to love: the Pancake Breakfast at Duffy’s, and the Book Sale at the Kennebunk Free Library. From there people are invited to enjoy the many activities set up along Main Street. The parade is another annual ritual for the town. It will take place at 11:30 AM, starting at Water Street, turn onto Dane Street, and finish at Park Street, where participants can loop back around to Main street for the festivities. Children are invited to join in the parade by dressing up in their favorite costumes and wave to the spectators. Parents are welcome to accompany their children and you don’t have to be a Kennebunk resident to participate. The parade line-up is at 11:15 AM on Water Street. At Waterhouse Center there will be crafters, food vendors, rock climbing wall, pumpkin coloring, Twisting Fun balloon man, scavenger hunt, and more! One new item being added this year is a pumpkin carving contest. The public is invited to carve a pumpkin at home then bring it down to Waterhouse Center to be put on display for a people’s choice award. Another new item is the giant pumpkin. Oct. 1 and 2, Saturday and Sunday, 10am-5pm/Sat, 10am-4pm/Sun, “Maine Women in the Arts Big & Small Show,” This show offers a wide selection of original, framed fine art pieces ranging in size from “big” to “small.” The artists’ work will be juried and awards given in various categories. MWA chairperson Pam Edwards says, “MWA’s Annual Awards Show will, for the 1st time, be held in conjunction with our all-original Fall Big and Small Show. The artists will be putting their best foot forward for the theme of ‘The Artists Journey.’ We expect to see the vibrant colors of Maine’s favorite season reflected in diverse media and styles,” free, Masonic Lodge, Kennebunkport, Temple Street, Kennebunkport. Oct. 1, Saturday, 7:30pm, “The Lift,” the story of Lilyand Rose–two dancers who meet in college and reunite 30 years later. The Lift is a mind-bending journey of memory, regret and courage. A one-act version of The Lift was selected for production for the 2015 Maine Playwrights’ Festival. Oct. 1, Saturday, 8pm, “All About Elvis,” Rex Fowler of famed folk-rock duo Aztec Two-Step has an exciting new show that pays homage to Elvis Presley’s legacy. The evening includes a screening of Fowler’s original 45-minute documentary film 200 CADILLACs, followed by a Q and A, and then a concert of early Elvis classics performed by Rex & The Rockabilly Kings. Elvis’ musical contribution, cultural impact, and artistic achievement made him an unsurpassed 20th century icon.
