Sept. 22-25, Thursday-Sunday, 7:30pm/Thurs, 8pm/Fri. and Sat, 2pm/Sun, “Nina,” The Theater Project of Brunswick is proud to open their 45th season with the original drama NINA by Lynne Conner. What makes for a happy life? Nina focuses on the lives of two concentration camp survivors whose fifty-year friendship is being challenged by the death of a daughter. Set in the mid-1980s, the action moves back and forth between the locker room of the Jewish Community Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and the lawn of a summer retreat as the two life-long friends struggle to understand their roles as mothers of “American” children who have not suffered—or so they believe, $25, The Theater Project, 14 School Street, Brunswick. FMI: 207-729-8584, www.theaterproject.com.
Sept. 23, Friday, 7:30pm, “Blues & Roots Duo,” Ben Hunter and Joe Seamons will perform in concert. The Seattle-based duo have been acclaimed for their unique blend of pre-blues a cappella field hollers, fiddle & banjo breakdowns, and duet distillations of early jazz. Ever since Dom Flemons, a founding member of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, invited them to tour and appear on his album, Prospect Hill, their star has been rising. In January of this year, they released their second album and were awarded first place at the 26th annual International Blues Challenge in Memphis in the solo/duo category, competing against 94 acts representing 16 countries, $12/adults, $8/students, Phippsburg Congregational Church, 10 Church Lane, Phippsburg. Sept. 23, Friday, 7:30pm, “John Gorka,” is perhaps the quintessential iconic singer-songwriter of the 80’s folk scene. He launched his career in New Jersey, but forged his legacy in the Greenwich Village Fast Folk scene, where he honed his craft and persona into an unmistakable image, the shy, wry, insightful, sensitive singer-songwriter has been copied and parodied. But the old coat he wove still fits, and still suits him well, $25, $2 handling fee, The Opera House at Boothbay Harbor, 86 Townsend Ave., Boothbay Harbor. FMI: 207-633-5159, www.boothbayoperahouse.org.
Sept. 16-18, Friday-Sunday, 7:30pm/Fri. and Sat, 2pm/Sun, “The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged),” “Three madcap actors weave their wicked way through all of Shakespeare’s comedies, histories, and tragedies in one wild ride that will leave you breathless and helpless with laughter.” From well-known comedies and tragedies to the more obscure “problem plays” and even the sonnets — this is a great introduction for those new to the Bard and a fun review for those familiar with the canon. May not be suitable for children and very serious adults, $15/door, $10/advance, $5/high school students, Freeport Performing Arts Center, 30 Holbrook Street, Freeport.
