Sept. 24, Saturday, 8am, “AppleFest 5k,” great for runners, joggers and walkers of all ages. The course starts and ends at the beautiful and historic Cumston Hall (796 Main Street) in Monmouth. After the race, take part in the awards ceremony, have breakfast at the church next door, tour the local history museum, buy a pie, make a scarecrow, and enjoy the rest of the day’s festival events. Sept. 24, Saturday, 7:30pm, “Capital City Improv,” Capital City Improv comedy troupe uses audience suggestions to create a completely customized comedy show. Based in Augusta, Maine, Capital City Improv has been making people laugh for over two years with their quick witted, lighting fast short-form improv. Their 80 minute shows utilize the audience and their suggestions to create something wonderful, right on the spot! Improv is a form of live theater where the plot, characters and all other aspects are made up on the spot, often by the audience! Sept. 25, Sunday, 2pm, “Four Hands, Four Feet, Twenty Finger, One Organ,” Celebrating 150 years of the E.& G.G. Hook Opus #389 featuring duo-organ team of Matthias Schmelmer and Dawid Slusareczyk; refreshments will be served. Dawid Slusarczyk studied musicology and organ at Jagiellonian University in Krakow, where he obtained his doctorate degree with a dissertation on “The connection of word and music in the composition of the Jasna Gora Monastery in Czestochowa, Poland. Since 2005, he works as organist and director of music at the evangelical-lutheran church in Wrochaw, where he is regularly playing a magnificent 3-manual late romantic organ built by the German company, Steinmeyer in 1924. He is also an associate professor at the evangelical college in Wrochaw and at the music academy in Lodz.
Matthias Schmelmer studied music in Berlin at the College of Church Music. Since 2005 he works as music director of the Heilig-Kreuz Kirche and Passionskirche in the middle of the vibrant Kreuzberg district of Berlin. He plays regularly on the Kreuz church 553 Hook organ from 1870, and he has become especially interested in American organ music. He regularly presents this music in organ recitals in Berlin, Germany, Poland and the United States.
