Aug. 18, Thursday, 7pm, “Rutgers Trio,” Trio features three wonderful and critically acclaimed musicians from New York: Susan Poliacik on cello; mezzo soprano Janara Kellerman; and pianist Mary Nelson. Dolly Levi is a matchmaker who merrily arranges things…like furniture, daffodils, and lives. Horace Vandergelder, a half-a-millionaire, feed store owner in Yonkers, requires her services. He needs a woman and has his heart set on a certain milliner. A widow, Dolly finds herself in love with the grumpy Vandergelder. She weaves a web of romantic complications involving him, his clerks Cornelius and Barnaby, his weeping niece Ermengarde, struggling artist Ambrose, the hat maker Irene Molloy, and her assistant Minnie Fay. The lovebirds are caught up in the great Fourteenth Street Association Parade as they make their way to the most elegant and expensive restaurant in town, the Harmonia Gardens. Aug. 19-21, Friday-Sunday, all day events, “24th Annual Great Falls Balloon Festival,” One of the largest hot air balloon festivals in northern New England, the Great Falls Balloon Festival is gearing up for its 24th annual festival in Lewiston and Auburn, Maine. This year’s theme is “The Force Awakens” featuring a Master Yoda and Darth Vader special shaped hot air balloons along with 23 additional regular shaped balloons. The festival also features 30 different food booths, craft and trade stalls, and a children’s area. Music is provided by many different entertainers, from children’s shows to blues singers, to jazz, pop, and oldies. Aug. 19-21, Friday-Sunday, 7:30pm/Fri. and Sat, 2pm/Sun, “Agatha Christie’s: Black Coffee,” was originally produced in 1930. “Black Coffee” is significant in Christie’s body of work as it is the first piece that she wrote specifically for the stage, and features Hercule Poirot, one of Christie’s most beloved of characters. The story involves the development of a formula for an atom bomb by a British inventor, who has sent for Poirot to help him with its protection. Unfortunately, Poirot arrives just a few minutes too late and discovers that the inventor is dead and the formula is missing. Aug. 19-20, Friday-Saturday, 8pm, “The Rocky Horror Show Live,” Rocky for Equality, a local theater group, to return to Augusta this summer for its 4th annual production of Richard O’Brien’s The Rocky Horror Show LIVE. Tickets are available online. The story follows Brad Majors and his fiancé, Janet Weiss. Two young, ordinary, healthy kids who find themselves stranded with a flat tire. Upon knocking on a nearby castle for help, they are swept into chaos by Franknfurter, a mad transvestite scientist, and his bizarre followers. Join our heroes as they discover their inner desires and give in to absolute pleasure. This campy classic is a tribute to the age of B-rated horror movies with a cult following that spans over four decades.
