July 16, Saturday, 8am-4pm, “Pushaw to Penobscot,” Last year canoe trip was a great success! All participants enjoyed the 10-mile downstream paddle and stops along the way. Many people remained on the waiting list because the interest was so great. We are offering this trip again. Join Bucky Owen and John Bear Mitchell to form a flotilla of six 28-foot canoes for a 10-mile journey from Hirundo Wildlife Refuge to Indian Island in Old Town. During the 4-5 stops along the way the canoes will raft together for talks about archaeology, past climates, the use of the area by Paleoindians and the Penobscot Nation, Penobscot River Restoration, fish migration, and more… Bring picnic lunch; drinks will be provided, $5/member, $25/non-member, Hirundo Wildlife Refuge, 1107 West Old Town Road, Old Town. July 16-17 and 20, Saturday-Sunday and Wednesday, 10am-4pm, “Northeastern Primitive Rendezvous,” will be in the fields of the historic Wiswell Farm from July 15-22, 2016. As a part of Orrington’s Old Home Week, hundreds of settlers, including the local Acadia Frontiersmen, set up their canvas tents and live as our ancestors did hundreds of years ago. Representing the fur traders era from 1640-1840, the participants will bring history alive and you can step into the past, Wiswell Farm, 109 River Road, Orrington. Join the Fields Pond Audubon Center staff for a full moon canoe tour at 8 p.m. Sunday, July 17, at the center.
