April 14, Thursday, 6pm, “Restoring Migratory Fish to the Penobscot,” Joe Zydlewski, a fisheries scientist and a professor with the U.S.Geological Survey and the University of Maine, will give a talk on restoring migratory fish to the Penobscot River. Zydlewski’s work focuses on the study of fish movements and migrations, particularly those of diadromous fish such as Atlantic salmon, American shad, alewife and sea lamprey. He has developed a research program that has contributed to understanding how dams and their removal influence fish communities and river ecology, Fields Pond Audubon Center, 216 Fields Pond Road, Holden. April 16, Saturday, 10-11:30am, “Fiddleheads of Ostrich Fern & Wild Leeks,” springtime in Maine is synonymous with Fiddleheads and Dandelion Greens. While dandelions are easily recognized, identifying the correct fern fiddlehead, among Maine’s many ferns, can be a challenge. Dave Fuller will be discussing the biology of Ostrich fern, key identification features and the harvesting of its fiddleheads. He will also discuss his new work with wild leeks in Maine. Dave’s presentation includes images taken in the field and concludes with a walk searching for last year’s spore-bearing fronds, easily identified by the distinctive feather-like shape, registration requested, $5, Hirundo Wildlife Refuge, 1107 West Old Town Road, Old Town. April 17, Sunday, 1pm, “The Met: Live in HD – Les Pecheurs de Perles,” Bizet’s gorgeous opera of lust and longing set in the Far East returns to the Met stage for the first time in 100 years. Soprano Diana Damrau stars as Leïla, the beautiful Hindu priestess pursued by rival pearl divers competing for her hand. Her suitors are tenor Matthew Polenzani and baritone Mariusz Kwiecien, who sing the lilting duet “Au fond du temple saint,” which opera fans know and adore. Director Penny Woolcock explores the timeless themes of pure love, betrayal, and vengeance in a production that vividly creates an undersea world on the stage of the Met.
