Sept. 10-12, Thursday-Saturday, 8pm, “Dearly Departed,” in the Baptist backwoods of the Bible Belt, the beleaguered Turpin family proves that living and dying in the South are seldom tidy and always hilarious. Despite their earnest efforts to pull themselves together for their father’s funeral, the Turpin’s other problems keep over-shadowing the solemn occasion: first-born Ray-Bud drinks himself silly as the funeral bills mount; Junior, his younger brother is juggling financial ruin, a pack of no-neck monster kids, and a wife who suspects him of infidelity in the family car; their spinster sister, Delightful, copes with death as she does with life, by devouring junk food; and all the neighbors add more than 2 cents, $17-$35, Lakewood Theatre, 76 Theater Rd., Madison. Sept. 11, Friday, 2pm and 7pm, “Ralph and Averill Lovely,” Back by popular demand, this father (Ralph) and son (Averill) duo returns to the Sawyer Memorial. The only thing better than swing is swing that’s had some of its polish rubbed off, been run through the blues mill, been driven down a country road, and rolled around in the bluegrass. When you’re done, you have a product that fairly well defies all reason and sensibility, but somehow it works. Ralph and Averill Lovely have been operating in this genre of Hillbilly Swing for a long time. This father/son duo has been playing together since the Carter Administration.
