Aug. 6-9 and 12, Thursday-Sunday and Wednesday, 8pm/Thurs-Sat, 4pm/Sun, 2pm and 7pm/Wed, “Laughing Stock,” Laughing Stock goes on stage and backstage at The Playhouse, a rustic New England summer theatre, whose ambitious repertory season includes Dracula, Lear, and Charley’s Aunt. The virtuoso farce follows the well-intentioned but over-matched company from outrageous auditions to ego-driven rehearsals through opening nights gone disastrously awry to the elation of a great play well told. Misplaced technical cues, forgotten lines, wrong entrances, eccentric acting, and theater games will tickle the funny bone. A rendition of Auld Lang Syne will dampen the eye. With Laughing Stock, a balance is struck between a depiction of everything that can and usually does go wrong with a genuinely affectionate look at the magic that holds theatre companies together, $20-$35, Lakewood Theater, 76 Madison Road, Madison.
