Scopes was put on trial for violating state law prohibiting the teaching of any theory that contradicted the biblical account of divine creation. Two of the most famous lawyers and orators in the land contested the case. Scopes was defended by the legendary Clarence Darrow and the prosecution was led by three-time presidential candidate William Jennings Bryan. Darrow’s expenses were paid by the Baltimore Sun papers, home of the famed, and cynical, journalist H.L. Mencken, who covered the trial. The play includes a love interest, Rachel, and an activist, her father, the fundamentalist preacher Reverend Brown. The trial is part circus, part revival meeting, and all battle between those who believe the Bible is literally true and those who believe “an idea is a greater monument than a cathedral.” Scopes lost but the freedom to think prevailed. The play takes place in a small town, in an unnamed state, in the summer time, “not too long ago,” $21.50, Lakewood Theater, 76 Theater Road, Madison. FMI: 207-474-7176, www.lakewoodtheater.org.
