Mar. 6, Friday, 12pm, “The Irish of Portland Maine,” Irish historian, researcher and Maine author, Matthew Jude Barker, author of The Irish of Portland, Maine: A History of Forest City Hibernians, will explain how the Irish influenced Portland from its early days through the twentieth century, as well as share stories of the triumphs and challenges they faced, bring a lunch if you wish, light refreshments will be served, free, Wells Public Library, 1434 Post Road, Wells. Mar. 6 – 8, Friday-Sunday, 7:30pm/Fri. and Sat., 2pm/Sun., “Tick, Tick..Boom!,” a musical look at the courage it takes to follow your dream, Jonathan Larson’s autobiographical tale of a young composer on the brink of turning 30 and falling into oblivion. This show takes you on the journey that led to the Broadway blockbuster, Rent. Mar. 6, Friday, 8pm, “An Evening with Kat Edmonson,” a stunningly sweet singer with a uniquely expressive voice. She has played with the likes of Gary Clark Jr., Lyle Lovett, Michael Kiwanuka and Chris Isaak and had memorable turns on “Austin City Limits,” and “A Prairie Home Companion.” Her 2009 debut, Take to the Sky, comprised creative interpretations of standards and pop hits while her brilliant 2012 follow-up, Way Down Low, was called “one of the greatest vocal albums I’ve ever heard” by The Boston Globe. Mar. 10, Tuesday, 7pm, “‘Friendship in Books: Writer’s Talks at Jewett House, Douglas Whynott,” in this intimate series at Sarah Orne Jewett’s childhood home, you’ll hear readings from contemporary writers, and learn what inspires them, refreshments will be served. The Sugar Season was selected as one of the New York Post’s “Must Read” books.
