Feb. 6 – 8, Friday – Sunday, 7pm/Fri. and Sat., 2pm/Sun., “Yeoman of the Guard,” or The Merryman and His Maid, was called “a genuine English opera” when it premiered in London in 1888, now, 127 years later, the Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Maine will bring it to full-throated life under the direction of Dede Johnson and John Haskell, music director, using gorgeous melody and opulent orchestral settings, Gilbert & Sullivan tell a tale of bravery and disappointed love, against the background of the Tower of London in the early 16th century, The Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Maine has an unbroken history of annual Gilbert & Sullivan productions since 1976, and is a community organization that incorporates newcomers and generations of loyal members who love to sing and perform these operatic works, $20, The Grand Auditorium, 165 Main Street, 165 Main Street, Ellsworth. Feb. 7, Saturday, 12:55pm, “The Met Opera Live in HD: Offenbach’s Les Contes d’Hoffmann (The Tales of Hoffmann),” the magnetic tenor Vittorio Grigolo takes on the tortured poet and unwitting adventurer of the title of Offenbach’s operatic masterpiece, in the Met’s wild, kaleidoscopic production. Soprano Hibla Gerzmava faces the operatic hurdle of singing all three heroines – each an idealized embodiment of some aspect of Hoffmann’s desire.
