View Wildlife From Trail Beside Torsey Pond, Readfield, Maine


Thanks to the Kennebec Land Trust and Town of Readfield, Maine, there are numerous hiking options available. Whether wearing hiking boots, snowshoes or Nordic skis, these wonderful, short hikes will lead you into the Maine woods. Wonder about those who came before and built the stonewalls and foundations. Focus your binoculars on the water and plants, looking for birds and other wildlife. Enjoy being outside. And don’t forget your camera.

 

 

 

 

 


Macdonald Conservation Area
An almost two-mile loop passes through the 19th century Selden Smith family farm. On the Jones Brook Trail, look for the house and barn foundations–referencing the former use of this land.
Trail Access: Kents Hill Road, Readfield
Degree of Difficulty: Easy
Readfield Town Farm Forest
Formerly known as the Readfield Town Farm, a place where those in need could live
and work during the 19th and 20th centuries, the forest now offers a four-mile network of trails on 110 acres.
Trail Access: Belz Road, Readfield
Degree of Difficulty: Easy
Gannett Woods
The trail winds through the woods and beside Shed Pond. Via this trail, you may also reach the summit of Monk’s Hill.
Trail Access: Scribner Hill Road, Readfield
Degree of Difficulty: Easy/Moderate
Wyman Memorial Forest
The trail passes through the forest once owned by Walter Wyman, co-founder of Central Maine Power. It connects with the Gannett Woods trail.

Degree of Difficulty: Easy
Readfield Fairgrounds
Historically, this 35-acre property was the site of the local agricultural fair. Now, a 1.1-mile network of trails meanders across the fields and through the forest.
Trail Access: Church Road, Readfield
Degree of Difficulty: Easy
Torsey Pond Nature Preserve
Viewing sited for wading birds and other wildlife are the highlight of this network of trails. Don’t forget your binoculars.
Trail Access: Route 41, Readfield
Degree of Difficulty: Easy
Echo Lake Watershed Preserve
Opposite the trailhead for the Torsey Pond Nature Preserve is a short trail leading to two beaver bogs. This is another great site to view wildlife.
