Quintessential Log Cabin Overlooks Crystal Lake, Gray, Maine

Boasting views of Crystal Lake in Gray, Maine, this year-round log cabin is a classic lakefront home. Located at 124 Mayberry Road, the house is rustic, yet comfortable.

The cabin sits on a quarter-acre lot with 140 feet of water frontage. Outdoors, the lot is flat and surrounded by a mix of evergreen and hardwood trees.

Step inside and you’ll immediately be impressed with the coziness of the 1,060-square-foot space. On the main floor is a small kitchen and living room. The living room features a cathedral ceiling, exposed beams and propane stove–all adding to the ambiance.

Downstairs is a full, finished, walkout basement. Another propane stove warms this space, which includes a large sitting area and space for two double beds–think master bedroom suite. Right out the sliding glass doors is the patio, with the lake just a few steps away.

And the pièce de résistance–an enclosed, wrap-around sun porch. Sip your morning coffee here while listening to the loons. Jayne, one of the current owners, tells us that there are six loons on the lake each year, and often babies as well. You might even catch a glimpse of the eagle that flies by frequently. “We named him Eager,” says Jayne. She and her husband, Walter, have set their dining room table near the pellet stove on the porch–a perfect place to share a meal while enjoying the view.

Adding to the coziness–when they purchased the L.C. Andrews log cabin, Jayne and Walter had it completely winterized. All of the windows are new. They insulated the house, completed the basement, and added a new roof, septic and well.
Back outside, you’ll find a storage shed for your kayak or canoe paddles, life jackets and fishing gear.
From the dock, you can watch the trout jump each evening. Better yet, cast a line and catch dinner. Anglers will be happy to note that the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife has been stocking brook, brown and rainbow trout since 1989. Bass, perch and pickerel are also frequently caught. Jayne reminds us that one of the highlights of winter is the annual Crystal Lake USO Ice Fishing Derby, which raises money for the armed forces.
Jayne and Walter purchased the 1950s cabin in 1999. “We sat on a big rock down on the beach where the boat launch is [Wilkies Beach] and knew we were blessed,” says Jayne. Since then, they’ve hosted Christmas parties each year–with about 25 people in attendance. And during the summer, they frequently have 40-50 people over for a cookout.
Crystal Lake, also known as Dry Pond, encompasses 185 acres. It offers a peaceful lakefront environment where you can lead a life style far removed from the hectic pace of life, yet get an urban experience in nearby Portland. And it’s only a couple of hours drive from Boston. The Oxford Casino and Sunday River are just up the road.
“The best thing about the lake is the peace you feel when you are here,” says Jayne. But . . . she says they miss their hometown friends and family in Massachusetts and are ready to move back.
Sounds like the perfect opportunity for you to move in. This is just the place for a cozy romantic getaway, summer water sports vacation or ice fishing home base. Check it out.
