August 28 – 30, Thursday – Saturday, 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., “Encountering Maine,” Drawn from the Museum’s permanent collection, this exhibition includes a diverse selection of works depicting places in Maine by artists from the late nineteenth century up to the present. Encountering Maine presents artworks in a variety of media and styles by Maine natives such as Marsden Hartley, Bernard Langlais, William Manning, Charlie Hewitt and Melonie Bennett shown alongside works by artists who are recognized for their connections to the state, including George Hallowell, John Marin, Dahlov Ipcar, Berenice Abbott and Robert Indiana, free event, Bates Museum, 75 Russell Street, Lewiston. August 28 – 31, Thursday – Sunday, 8:00 p.m., “The Fall of the House of Usher,” A riveting new adaptation of the classic Poe tale, re-invented as a detective thriller, set in 1930s Boston. In the bleak hours before dawn a house burns to the ground, the once elegant manse of the Usher family. The dilapidated, musty, old ruin has become a heap of smoldering ashes. Two charred bodies are discovered. The peaceful sleep of Boston detective Michael Shaughnessy has been interrupted and now he is seeking the how, who, and why of the fall of the House of Usher. Shaughnessy interrogates James, a successful author and childhood friend of Roderick and Madeline Usher. The brightly lit interrogation room is set in the middle of the decaying parlor and the tantalizing, terrifying tale is told in a series of fast paced flashbacks. Buildings that once seemed ordinary will take on eerie new dimensions as The Lady in the Red Cloak relives their history and that of the ghostly entities that are said to still reside there. August 30, Saturday, 8am, “ Race for the Lakes 5k,” The 7th Annual Race for the Lakes 5K is hosted by the lake associations for East Pond, Great Pond, Long Pond, McGrath Pond and Salmon Lake, Messalonskee Lake, and North Pond, working together as the Belgrade Regional Conservation Alliance Lake Trust. Lake Trust programs include Courtesy Boat Inspections, Invasive Plant Surveys, the Conservation Corps, and a Working Group to improve and stabilize water quality by limiting Phosphorus enrichment of our lakes.
