Enjoy Sunset Views From Glassed-in Porch of this Rustic Camp on Sands Pond, Denmark, Maine

A rustic Maine camp on Sands Pond in Denmark, Maine, could easily become your getaway destination. Located at 209 Sands Pond Way, the camp sits nestled in the trees and close to the water’s edge.

Encompassing 1,282 square feet, the three-season camp has seven rooms, including three bedrooms and a bathroom. There’s an electric stove in the kitchen and wood stove in the living/dining combo. Throughout, you’ll find a pine interior and exposed beams.
Across the front of the camp is a glassed-in porch. With its westerly views, this is the place to watch the sun set.
Bob, the owner’s son-in-law, tells us that the property is actually two lots, purchased at different times in the late 1950s. “They [his in-laws] built a small camp on the first lot were the parking area is now,” says Bob, “and used that while they built the camp that is there today. A fire in 1990 took the small camp and it was never rebuilt but the extra room made for vehicle access and parking closer to the camp and for a small boat launch.”
Because it is two lots combined to form one, the lot features 230 feet of water frontage, making it a very private place. “With 56 feet of dock\float there is plenty of room for motorboats, canoes, kayaks and paddle boats,” says Bob. “The swimming area has a sandy bottom and is it is great for little ones as it gets deeper gradually.”
The lot is maintenance free since it remains in its natural state, with a vegetated buffer between the camp and the water. Using a picnic table and grill, you can set up your outdoor kitchen under the trees and be ready to feed the family or guests in no time. Bob tells us, “Many great evenings were spent at the campfire making s’mores with the whole family.” Think roasted marshmallows, graham crackers, and my favorite, dark chocolate candy bars. Some people like to use peanut butter cups. S’more please. Whatever your preference, can’t you just hear the snap, crackle, pop of the fire?
Sands Pond covers 256 acres and has a maximum depth of 49 feet, though most of it is much shallower. It does have a lot of glacial outcroppings, so beware when boating. Originally, it was called Little Hancock Pond and is known by some locals as Walden Pond because Camp Walden is located on it.
Via a narrow thoroughfare, Sands Pond is connected to the larger Hancock Pond, which covers 858 acres and has a maximum depth of 64 feet. Both ponds have above average water quality.
According to local folklore, the dug way between the two ponds was originally wider and built by logging companies, who also built a dam on Hancock Pond, probably 150-200 years ago. Today, in the high water of spring, a motor boat can move easily between the ponds, but by the end of summer, the thoroughfare is only accessible via canoe or kayak. In fact, Bob reminds us that “the pond is one of the quietest you will ever find as there are more canoes and kayaks than motor boats.” That’s worth a lot.
From the camp, you’ll be serenaded by loons in the morning and evening. You may even have the opportunity to see an eagle. And then there’s the fishing: “The fishing is some of the best around, large and smallmouth bass are abundant and brown trout are caught trolling throughout the summer,” says Bob.
Bob’s mother-in-law passed away five years ago, his father-in-law is elderly and can’t get to camp very often, and the rest of the family has spread out, so the time has come to sell this well-loved place. It’s not luxurious by any means, but if you are looking for a place that brings you back to a simpler, more peaceful time . . . let this camp become part of your family’s legacy. Like Bob and his family, you’ll cherish the memories.
