Saltbox Ready to Become Your Paradise on  Sebasticook Lake in Newport, Maine

You’ll get two for the price of one when you purchase this strikingly beautiful lakefront saltbox on Sebasticook Lake in Newport, Maine. Also located on the property at 354 Durham Road is a guest cottage.

The main house, built on a slab, features radiant heat and encompasses 1,752 square feet. The kitchen is well appointed and opens to the dining room and living room. Lake views are visible from the large windows and glass doors. In fact, because of its location in a quiet cove, you’ll enjoy water views from both the front and back of the house. Julia, the current owner, says, “From the house, the backyard is filled with lake, and the front yard is also filled with lake views. There’s a river that feeds into the lake that we can see through a screen of tree-lined shore from the front of the house, on the other side of the road from our driveway. No homes can be built there. This not only provides beauty on all sides, but also adds privacy.”

Three of the seven rooms are bedrooms, with the master bedroom and another located on the second floor. There are two full bathrooms. Exposed pine beams and walls accentuate the woodland setting.

A three car garage is attached to the house. Two of the bays are meant for car storage, while the third bay features a workshop in the front section and another bedroom, aka in-law apartment in the back. Julia tells us that’s one of the reasons they bought the house in 2002: “It was important to us to find a place where we could have a mother-in-law suite.”

The guest house encompasses 678 square feet. A ramp makes it handicap accessible. The house has two bedrooms, 1 bath, a kitchen,  living room and outdoor deck. Again, it is beautifully appointed with woodwork throughout.
For Julia, “The sunset pavilion is a favorite spot. It leads to the rabbit hole, where there is a deck directly above the water and sunset views are framed by the over-arching lakeside trees. Small scrubby pines screen the deck. When you sit here, you feel like you’re in a new world, one in which the sun and water and warmth of the day are all that matter. The rabbit hole deck is also a wonderful place to watch the sun set.”
Being near the end of the electric service line, Julia says that whenever there is a major storm, power outages were an issue. “For that reason we installed the generator that serves both the house and the cottage.”
When you make this your space, it will become the getaway destination for your family and friends. As Julia says, “Living here, cookouts are common and friends and family visit often, staying for a weekend or the week (So great to have a guest house!).  We love to spend the afternoon and evening grilling by the lakeside picnic table or on the guest house deck.”

The 1.16-acre property is relatively level and has 227 feet of water frontage and two docks. “There’s a 125-foot long dock that’s perfect for a ski boat, or party boat,” says Julia. “There’s a shorter dock where I like to keep the canoe and a kayak.” A fire pit and informal outdoor gardens and a rock wall hand built of Monson slate add to the pleasure and beauty.
The 4,537-acre Sebasticook Lake was historically known as Great East Pond. Anglers say this is one of the best bass fishing lakes in the state and bass tournaments are a common occurrence in the summer.
Any season of the year, you’ll find plenty to do from this ideal location. The Durham Bridge is just down the street and a favorite “jumping” spot. Even Julia confesses to jumping off. Then there’s the bird watching, including eagles and osprey, loons and ducks, sunset cruises on party barges, waterskiing, snow sledding, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and ice fishing.
When you want to get away, it’s a half an hour drive to both Bangor and Waterville. Julia says, “The Bangor waterfront has great concerts and there are great restaurants and shopping in both Bangor and Waterville.” It’s a 45 minute drive to Belfast and the Atlantic Ocean and about an hour to Moosehead Lake and Squaw Mountain. Sugarloaf is 1.5 hours away.
The house is for sale because Julia is moving home to Hawaii. It’s the perfect opportunity for you to make this your piece of paradise.
