A Summer Day on Long Lake, Harrison, Maine

Lakefront property owners cherish their classic Maine cabins, camps and cottages located on Crystal Lake and Long Lake in Harrison. They also love the smallness of this quintessential Maine town. To stretch your legs here, follow the sidewalk from one lake to the other. Begin at Crystal Lake, where you can pause to swim, play ball or just relax in the gazebo. Start walking and be sure to check out a book at the Harrison Village Library, purchase fresh vegetables at he seasonal farmers’ market in the town office parking lot, catch up on local gossip at the Market Basket or Village Tie-Up, enjoy lunch or dinner at the Olde Mill Tavern or Caswell House, browse through the antique shops and mosey on toward the boat launch and small beach on Long Lake. Beyond the town’s boundaries, you’ll also find other hiking spots to enjoy.




Stevens Brook Trail
This trail can be accessed from any number of points along the brook. Beside the path, remnants of twelve former mill sites and mill ponds are visible. Stevens Brook was named for Jacob Stevens, who started the first saw mill by Long Pond (now Long Lake) in 1768 and later moved his site to Highland Lake.

Trail Access: Several locations–On the eastern side of the bridge at Shorey Park; by the Magic Lantern, beside the Big Apple Gas Station below the Black Horse Tavern, Bridgton
Pondicherry Park
Located in downtown Bridgton, the 66-acre Pondicherry Park has trails that wind past stonewalls and through former pasture and farmland, much of which is now forested. These well-maintained trails traverse this wooded site beside Stevens and Willet Brooks. Kneeland Springs, a former family cabin renovated into an amphitheater, beaver dams and more await you in this delightful in-town getaway.

Trail Access: Bob Dunning Memorial Bridge behind Reny’s; across from Bridgton Hospital; lower Willet Road, Bridgton
Bald Pate Mountain
This preserve offers several well-marked trails, including a two-mile round trip leading up to the 1,000-foot granite summit. Scenic views are enjoyed from the top, where you’ll find pitch pines growing on fragile soil.
Degree of Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
Trail Access: Route 107, South Bridgton
Holt Pond Preserve
The trails are well marked and lead through a mixed forest of birch, beech, hemlock and pine. A red maple swamp, hemlock grove, river and quaking bog are just some of the highlights of this delightful destination.

Trail Access: Grist Mill Road, Bridgton
Pleasant Mountain
Four trail lead to the summit of this 2,006-foot mountain. To hike the entire ridge, plan on at least five hours. From the summit by the fire tower, enjoy views of the White Mountains and Fryeburg.

Trail Access: Ledges Trail, Mountain Road, Denmark; Bald Peak Trail, Mountain Road, Bridgton; Southwest Ridge Trail, West Denmark Road, Denmark; Fire Wardens Trail, Wilton Warren Road, Fryeburg
Mount Tir’em
The ledge at the top of the Daniel Brown Trail provides a perfect vantage point to view the lakes and surrounding mountains, including Bear and Pleasant Mountains.
Degree of Difficulty: Moderate
Trail Access: Plummer Hill Road, Waterford
Hawk Mountain
A gradual uphill walk on a gravel road leads to the summit. At the intersection, stay right. During spring and fall migration, the summit ledges are a prime spot to watch the bird of prey for which this mountain was named.
