Dec. 12, Thursday 7:00 p.m.-8:30 p.m., “A Secretly Handicapped Man,” Author Norbert Nathanson will give a presentation on his book, A Secretly Handicapped Man: A Memoir, born without feet and only one hand, Nathanson struggled to be accepted by society and find full-time employment, after over 30 years weathering stares and severe stigma, growing up in working-class, Depression-Era Pittsburgh, and trying desperately to enter the new field of television, the author experienced a miracle, new advances in medical science provided artificial legs which gave him normal height, natural appearance and gait, and the ability to enjoy previously unknown, life-altering public anonymity, his survival is a triumph, his life a victory, free event, Camden Public Library, 55 Main St., Camden. Dec. 12, Thursday, 7:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m., “Black Nativity,” was born in December 1961 at the 41st Street Theater in New York City, where six gospel singers, with accompaniment from a piano and a B-3 Hammond organ, performed the work by poet and playwright Langston Hughes, the show closed after 50 performances, Anthony Antolini—then a student, now Senior Lecturer in Music at Bowdoin, attended one of those performances as a Bowdoin sophomore, years later, Antolini discovered that fellow Mid-coast musician Aaron Robinson shared his interest in gospel music and retrieved from his collection a treasured and rare LP recording of that early show and gave it to him, Robinson fell in love with the music, started doing research, wrote down the arrangements (which had never been published) and then performed Black Nativity in concert several times beginning in 2001 at Immanuel Baptist Church in Portland, now Robinson has passed his arrangements – with additional spirituals – to Antolini, who has been rehearsing the 60-member chorus since September, suggested donation $20, contact venue for ticketing information, doors open at 7 p.m., St. Patrick Church, 380 Academy Hill Road, Newcastle.
