The Crystal Clear Waters of Molasses Pond

Lakefront property owners love Downeast Maine: Sunrises. Sunsets. Fresh air. Star-filled skies. Above average water quality. Lobster. Life is good. And it gets even better when you make time to take a hike and enjoy the spectacular views. There are numerous hikes in and around Ellsworth, but we’ll point out a few of our favorites.

Birdsacre Stanwood Wildlife Sanctuary
Two miles of trails meander through the woods and past babbling brooks and pristine ponds at this sanctuary, once the home of the Stanwood family and especially Cordelia Stanwood, the first female Ornithologist and Wildlife Photographer.
Degree of Difficulty: Easy
Trail Access: 289 High Street, Ellsworth

Indian Point Trail
A short hike leads across bog bridges and out to Indian Point on Union River, whree picnic tables await. Keep your eyes open for river otters, eagles, osprey and heron.

Trail Access: Tinker Hill Road, Ellsworth
Ellsworth Falls Rail Trail
The paved 1.6 mile trail links North Street to Birch Avenue and travels along the active line of Downeast Scenic Railways. Other trails in town include the East Greenway Trail and Leonard Lake Trail.
Degree of Difficulty: Easy
Trail Access: downtown Ellsworth
Black Mountain
Several trail options are available to climb the switch backs and rock steps leading through the spruce, fir and red maple forest to open ledges at the summit. Views include Tunk Lake, the peaks of Acadia and the Atlantic Ocean.
Degree of Difficulty: Moderate to Difficult
Trail Access: Donnell Pond Public Lands, Schoodic Beach Road, Sullivan
Peaked Mountain
Also known as Chick Hill, the 1.2 mile hike to the rocky summit is along an old road and up a steep bit of trail. From the granite top, enjoy a spectacular 360-degree view.
Degree of Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
Trail Access: Chick Hill Road, Clifton
Wildlands-Hothole Valley
A wooded valley bisected by Hothole Brook is home to a twenty-mile network of trails. These are multi-use gravel trails and footpaths, maintained by Great Pond Mountain Conservation Trust.
Degree of Difficulty: All abilities
Trail Access: Route 1, Orland
Acadia National Park
A wide variety of trails are located within the park on Mount Desert Island. There are 125 miles of trails in total; some are not open for winter use. Abilities range from very easy, such as the Jordan Pond Nature Trail to the easy Schooner Head Trail to the moderate Champlain North Ridge Trail to the difficult and strenuous Beehive Trail and Cadillac South Ridge Trail, with many more in each of these categories. The historic carriage road has 17 stone-faced bridges–each with a unique design.
