Branch Lake, Ellsworth, Maine: Large, Quiet & Idyllic for Lakefront Property

Branch Lake–A Premium Lake in Downeast Maine

Lakefront property owners on Branch Lake in Ellsworth, Maine, know that despite its large size, it’s a quiet location. And maybe we shouldn’t even be telling you about it, so it will stay that way. Shhh . . . read this to yourself and don’t let the word out or everyone will come.

Branch Lake encompasses 2,942 acres and has a 26.5 mile perimeter–the largest lake in the Downeast Lakes Region of Maine. The maximum depth is 124 feet, with a minimum depth of 39 feet. The water quality, like everything else about this lake, is above average.

What kind of fishery does Branch Lake support? The fishery is coldwater and warmwater.  For a while the stocking program was non-existent because there was no public access, but that has been remedied and sport fishing is now in recovery. Lake trout, salmon and smallmouth bass will tug on your line.
The new boat launch is located on Launch Access Road off Happytown Road. It includes a boat ramp, dock and parking area. There is also a power washer so you can clean your boat before and after you use it.
Branch Lake is the drinking source for the City of Ellsworth, so it must be protected. For this reason, you’ll find that there are strict regulations and Courtesy Boat Inspectors are on duty at the launch site. In addition, land at the south end of the lake, part of which is known as the Branch Lake Public Forest, is under conservation easement to protect the water supply. Low-impact, non-motorized public recreation is encouraged and there are trails that loop through the woods and along the shoreline of Branch Lake.
This is an idyllic lake for a getaway destination. Wooded roads teeming with balsam firs lead to classic Maine cabins, cottages and camps. You’ll feel like you’ve entered a gift shop when you smell the balsam, but in this case, it’s the real thing. Glimpse the lake as you drive in and feel your tension melt away.
Quiet coves, crystal, clear water, mountain views, gorgeous sunsets–it’s all right here. Picture yourself cooking meals while glimpsing out at the lake, dining on a secluded, screened-in porch, listening to the loons call to each other, sleeping peacefully as the fresh air wafts through the open window.
While on the lake you’ll feel private and secluded, yet you’ll be close to Ellsworth, Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. Ellsworth is a delightful little city to explore. The historic downtown features galleries, museums, theaters, shops and restaurants on Main Street. And of course, it’s also home to an LL Bean outlet, Reny’s (the Maine Adventure) and Marden’s.
Branch Lake is the place where you can strengthen bonds with family and friends while creating new memories. And always, you’ll wish you could stay longer.
