And of course, there’s Ellsworth and all its amenities. As the gateway to Mount Desert Island,  there’s plenty to see and do in the area. Did you know that Ellsworth is the largest city in Maine? When you consider its land mass, that is! Ellsworth encompasses 93.8 square miles. It was named for Oliver Ellsworth, a delegate to the 1787 Constitutional Convention.

On the quieter side is the quaint village of Surry, with a population of less than 1,500. According to The Names of Maine, the town fathers wanted a short name, and so it was named for Surrey, England, but the “e” was dropped to shorten it further. Surry has had a long tradition of being a boat building town.

Are you ready to catch some fish? Looking forward to sunbathing on your dock? Does an afternoon in front of a roaring fire on a snowy day appeal to you? Can’t wait to unwind in a serene surrounding? Need to get away from it all? Then Lower Patten Pond is the place for you.
