Lakefront property owners in the Bangor Lakes Region of Maine have a variety of places to exercise their legs. As a city, Bangor is a great place to visit for shopping, restaurants, theater and a variety of activities–including hiking. And some of the trails listed below are just outside of Bangor.


Indian Park Trail
You may want to park a vehicle at either end of this 1.8 mile trail. The trail travels along the Penobscot River and through the adjacent woods with spurs leading to ledges where you’ll enjoy great views. Do note that the spurs tend to be steep and slippery.
Degree of Difficulty: Easy-Moderate
Trail Access: Route 9 (three locations), Bangor
Cascade Park
Two short loops take hikers through a white pine forest, past a man-made waterfall and lead to a gazebo with numerous benches and a water fountain.

Trail Access: State Street, Bangor
Saxi Park
A 2.6-mile trail loops through a field and past a small pond. Watch for bobolinks and other birds.
Degree of Difficulty: Easy-Moderate

Essex Woods
Diverse wildlife and plant species on what was once the town dump, make this 2.3 mile network for trails very special.
Degree of Difficulty: Moderate

Kenduskeag Stream Trail
This one way 1.7-mile urban trail passes through the heart of Bangor. Follow the stream, stop to read about interesting historical facts and view remnants of the former Drummond Mill and lover’s leap.
Degree of Difficulty: Easy-Moderate
Trail Access: Fourteenth Street, Bangor
Prentiss Woods
The well-shaded 1.5 miles of trail in Prentiss Woods passes through a mixed forest, past some rocky outcroppings and fords several small streams. There are benches to pause on along the way.
Degree of Difficulty: Advanced
Trail Access: Grandview Avenue, Bangor
Northeast Penjajawoc Preserve
The 1.7-mile trail meanders through an upland forest, along the Upper Penjajawoc Stream and over some bog bridges leading to the Penjajawoc Marsh.
Degree of Difficulty: Moderate
Trail Access: Kittredge Road (beside the Bangor Land Trust), Bangor
Edgewood Walden Parke Preserve
A two-mile loop leads through an aspen/birch wood and past a series of beaver dams and lodges.
Degree of Difficulty: Easy
Trail Access: Walden Parke Way, Bangor
Brown Woods
The short trail passes through an old growth Eastern white pine forest as well as hardwoods. It goes along a small pond and there are plenty of wildflowers to be seen. Benches are found all along the way.

Fields Pond Audubon Center
The 2.3 mile network of trails travels through a variety of habitats, including along the shores of Fields Pond. A highlight includes siting species from the diverse butterfly population.

Trail Access: Fields Pond Road, Holden
Sherwood Forest Park Trail
A half mile loop leads walkers through the shaded forest and brings a touch of wildlife to a populated setting.
Degree of Difficulty: Easy
Trail Access: Robin Hood Drive, Brewer
