True’s Pond Offers Peaceful Respite After a Day Hike

Hiking trails abound in Montville and the surrounding towns. Hogback Mountain and Frye Mountain are accessible via Route 220. Both offer long ridges with plenty of outlooks. The trails are part of the Georges Highland Path, a forty-mile trail that connects low-impact hikes in this Midcoast Region.


Hogback Mountain
A 2.8-mile loop offers several sights well worth the effort. Along the way stop to examine the gigantic glacial erratic known as piano rock. Then climb up a 50-foot cliff with tiny cascading waterfalls. At the summit of this 1,115-foot mountain, you’ll be treated to fabulous southerly views.
Degree of Difficulty: Moderate/Advanced
Trail Access: Walker Ridge Road, Montville
Frye Mountain
The 7.4-mile loop trail is located within the 5,240-acre Frye Mountain Wildlife Management Area owned by the state. The trail will take you thorugh a mixed forest, beside Bartlett Stream and to the 1,139-foot summit of Frye Mountain,

Trail Access: Walker Ridge Road, Montville
Gibson Preserve
A 3.9 mile network of trails weaves through this 124-acre preserve. The trail system is bisected by the St. George River. The property is managed for wildlife habitat and an inventory indicates there are five amphibians, three reptiles, 59 birds and fourteen mammal species here.
Degree of Difficulty: Easy/Moderate
Trail Access: North Side–Rte 173, Searsmont; South Side–Ripley Corner Road, Searsmont
Canal Path
The 2.3-mile round trip follows a section of the historic Georges River Canal. Interpretive displays will help you understand what remains of the canal that was built in the 1700s.

Trail Access: Ghent Road, Searsmont
Appleton Preserve
For a short walk, try this 1.2-mile trail that follows gentle terrain and offers views of the St. George River. Along the way you’ll pass through several different wildlife habitats. A launch is also located here–for canoes and kayaks.
Degree of Difficulty: Easy
Trail Access: Intersection of Routes 131 & 105, Appleton
