It could be someone cooking in the farmer’s cottage, or a Washburn granddaughter, Ada Washburn or Anna Maud Washburn, in the 1867 Washburn mansion, or the school ma’am in the 1853 one-room schoolhouse who will encourage you to practice your mental arithmetic and penmanship using a quill pen under her watchful eye, History Tours are a fun way, for all ages, to learn what rural Maine life was like in the 1800s. Bring your imagination and ask all the questions you want. Enjoy the quality of place and landscape of the Norlands. A short walk from the Norlands is the Waters Hill Cemetery, where several Civil War veterans are laid to rest. A short trail takes you to the Pools of Simeon, reflecting pools designed by William Drew Washburn in 1903. Maps are available in the giftshop. Aug. 31, Saturday, 7-10pm, Denny Breau, his rhythmically flawless and dazzlingly clear style allows him to do amazing and stunning things with a six-string guitar. The lighting fast guitar lines that seem almost humanly impossible to accomplish are balanced with those that have a quiet intimacy and wrap tenderly around his carefully crafted songs. He mixes genres with ease — folk, Delta blues, country and jazz — “creating a totally accessible musical mélange that captivates as it entertains,” according to Lucky Clark writing for the Kennebec (Maine) Journal, Pedro O’Hara’s Restaurant, 134 Main Street, Lewiston.
