Carvers Pond on Vinalhaven in Penobscot Bay, Maine, offers lakefront property owners a saltwater pond experience. The pond was named for the Carver family, who settled the island in 1765. Vinalhaven is located 12 miles off the coast of Maine and is served year round by the Maine State Ferry, which crosses between Rockland and the island. The ferry terminal is located just one hour and 45 minutes from Portland and only three hours and 45 minutes from Boston.

The pond encompasses 147 acres with a 4.3 mile perimeter. It has no known invasive aquatic infestations. This tidal pool is fed twice daily as the water flows over the tidal falls between Carter’s Harbor and the pond.
Owning a classic Maine cottage on Carters Pond means you can easily paddle to Main Street, since the village of Vinalhaven is set between the pond and harbor. It’s also a short walk to town.
Amenities on the island include a K-12 school, medical and dental health center, fire department and ambulance service. About 1,200 people live year round on the island, which is “Maine’s largest off-shore island community,” and the population swells in the summer months.
Love fresh seafood? Arise before the crack of dawn and walk to the harbor to watch the lobstermen ready their boats for the day’s haul. Vinalhaven is home to one of the world’s largest lobster boat fleets. Greet the lobstermen when they return and make a purchase right off the boat.
When you don’t want to do the cooking, stop by the Harbor Gawker, situated beside the reversing falls and overlooking Carver Pond. They serve delicious, fresh seafood and homemade desserts. Another local favorite gathering place is ARCafe, an Internet cafe, featuring a coffee shop, bakery, local foods bistro and fresh foods market.
From your retreat on Carvers Pond, you’ll surely want to explore the island. There are a myriad of walking trails, including those at Lane’s Island Preserve, a rocky headland located just minutes from the pond. The preserve is connected to Vinalhaven by a causeway and owned by the Nature Conservancy. It’s a great spot for viewing  bald eagles, osprey, king fishers and terns. Maybe even a puffin. Another trail to hike is the Basin Preserve Trail, which leads around Long Pond to the shore of the Basin, another inland salt-waterway.
To view spectacular sunsets, Sunset Rock on City Point is a must. And to take a dip in clear, freshwater, stop by Lawson’s Quarry or Booth’s Quarry, which has a distinctive rock in the middle.
Whatever you choose to do, we’re sure you’ll appreciate the relaxed atmosphere, unhurried pace and simpler way of life. Slow down, breath in the salt air, take time to smell the flowers and feel at one with yourself. You can do this from an island retreat on Carvers Pond.
