Eco-friendly Home on Pequawket Lake(Horne Pond) in Limington, Maine

Enter the garden gate to this outstanding property at 5 and 7 Corvette Drive on Pequawket Lake, aka Horne Pond, in Limington, Maine, and you won’t want to leave. The current owner wishes he didn’t have to, but life’s transitions don’t always go the way we intend.

He and his wife purchased the property in the mid 70s and began building their retirement home in 1984. Intended to be low maintenance and energy efficient, they built the house partially into the ground, taking advantage of earth as a natural insulator. Since it was architecturally designed for southern exposure, plenty of windows offer light, warmth and views of the lake.

The ranch-style main house includes an open concept kitchen and living room, bathroom, two bedrooms and the crème de la crème . . . a conservatory with hot tub, which overlooks the lawn and water. Soak in the hot tub on a starry or snowing evening, glass of wine in hand and not a care in the world–sounds heavenly. Decks and patios, plus a sweeping lawn to the waterside beach provide plenty of space for outdoor living.

You’ll note that I mentioned “main house” above. Yes, there’s another gem on this property, albeit a diamond in the rough–a rustic log cabin that can serve as a year-round in-law apartment, guest home or studio. It even has a wrap around porch, galley kitchen, one bedroom and small living room, 3/4 bathroom and full basement. All it needs is some tender loving care.

Though the main house does not have a basement, you’ll find plenty of places to store your toys. There are two double vehicle/boat garages and a carport. The garage attached to the house is heated. The second floor of the freestanding garage has a sliding door on the back side and a bow window with lake views on the front. Perhaps you’ll want to use this as another guest room or rumpus space for the kids to play. With all of this space to live and play, you’ll have to force yourself to leave for groceries.

The open yard and sandy beach afford wonderful views of the lake and colorful fall foliage. The beach, which spans 50 feet of waterfront, gently slopes from the lawn and creates a substantial amount of space for basking in the sun, building sand castles and writing messages in the sand. Pequawket Lake was named for a Native American encampment that was once located on the eastern side. At 166 acres, with a maximum depth of 58 feet, this spring-fed lake has above average water quality.

Because the cove is shallow close to the shore, the owner tells us that boats don’t come near. Within twenty feet of the shore, there is a dropoff. A rolling aluminum dock is included in the sale.

The loons and their babies enjoy the quietness of the lake. Just this summer the owner saw a mother loon teaching her baby to fish. The lake is open to all recreational activities; such as, kayaking, canoeing, water skiing, fishing/ice fishing, snowmobiling and x-country skiing.

Boating on the lake offers views of nearby mountains including Moody and Sawyer Mountains. The Frances Small Heritage Trust owns 1,400 acres on Sawyer Mountain, which is open to the public for hiking, hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and horseback riding.

The property is located on a dead-end road, so it’s quite solitary. When you want to share it, there is plenty of space for barbecues, weddings and games, e.g. badminton, horseshoes and bocce. And don’t forget–swimming.

This eco-friendly lakefront property is unique. You’ll be enchanted by the view and want to spend all your days looking at the world from the conservatory. Enter the garden gate and let 5 and 7 Corvette Drive in the sleepy town of Limington become your lakefront sanctuary.
