Looking at the Lake

Kezar Lake at Severance Lodge Club in Lovell, Maine

A newly constructed Arts and Crafts-style Maine cottage at 77 Tennis Court Road in Lovell is ideally situated a stone’s throw from Kezar Lake. The 5 bedroom, 3 1/2 bathroom year round house is located at Severance Lodge Club, a private community with well-appointed homes, a club house and gourmet restaurant. Please realize that this is not a drive-by location.

In the late 1800s, Ben Brown recognized the beauty of the lake and surrounding mountains and had the vision to develop a hunting and fishing lodge situated to enjoy the spectacular sunsets and lake views. Located on the eastern shore of Kezar, Brown’s Camps enticed wealthy sporting lodgers to come here.
In 1934, the Severance brothers, Harold and Will, purchased the property. Eventually Will sold his portion to Harold and Lillian, his wife. They changed the name from Brown’s Camps to Severance Lodge and turned it into a resort. In the 1970s, when they were ready to retire, the Severances created the Severance Lodge Club–a private community.
The 2,860 square-foot year-round house at 77 Tennis Court was the historic main dining room of Ben Brown’s lodge. The dining room was destroyed by fire in 2007. The current owners built the cottage in the grandfathered footprint to remain close to the lakefront. “There is nothing new in construction built this close to the lakefront. And it never floods due to its elevated concrete foundation,” they said.
The house features an open concept kitchen/dining/living room and half bath on the first floor. Radiant heat and a fieldstone fireplace keep it cozy on cool summer nights and throughout the winter. The master bedroom with a full bathroom plus another bedroom, office/den and bathroom are on the second floor. Some of the best lake views can be seen from the three bedrooms on the third floor, which share a bathroom.
Set on Middle Bay, views include the sunset over the White Mountains, including Mount Kearsarge North in Intervale, New Hampshire and the North and South Baldface Mountains in Evans Notch.

The front of the property has a level, manicured lawn and mulched footpath leading from the porch to the edge of the water. Plan on spending hours sitting in your red Adirondack chair taking in the views and enjoying the peace and quiet of Kezar Lake. Since the lake is hidden from all roads, there is no road noise. Instead, “the tremolos of the loons will uplift your day in this serene paradise,” says the owner.
For entertainment, barbecue in the private courtyard behind the house. Being a resort, there is a gourmet dining room, which can seat 150. Throughout the summer season, activities at the Club include clambakes, tennis and fishing tournaments, sailing regattas, beach bonfires and more. You may swim at either South Beach or North Beach. Dock and mooring space is also available. If you enjoy wildlife, this is your place to be: eagles, moose, beaver, fox, deer, nesting turtles, loons, birds and ducks of all descriptions have been spotted.
A full-time manager who lives on the grounds, and his staff, maintain the property, including mowing and lawn care, plowing roads, removing trash, housekeeping, repairs and any other services you need.
At nine miles long, Kezar Lake has been described as “one of the three most beautiful lakes in the world” by National Geographic. Set in the foothills of the White Mountains, the lake encompasses 2,665 acres and has a maximum depth of 155 feet with a mean depth of 34 feet. It’s divided into sections known locally as Upper Bay, Middle Bay and Lower Bay. The Narrows separates the latter two.
The current owners love the location, being on the lake and close to all that the small town of Lovell has to offer. The trailhead to Sabbatus Mountain is six minutes away. A walk to the Center Lovell Market, a local gathering place, takes fifteen minutes. The Charlotte Hobbs Memorial Library offers nature talks, computers and of course, books. The very active Greater Lovell Land Trust has cleared many trails on their properties throughout Lovell, Stow and Stoneham and they offer fabulous walks, hikes and talks about the Maine woods. The Kezar Lake Watershed Association tests for water quality and conducts milfoil screenings at boat launches. Blueberry pancakes at Rosie’s Diner, Melby’s coffee frappes and the firehouse’s chicken suppahs are other favorites.
Purchase this home and you’ll have a private personal retreat on one of the most beautiful and peaceful lakes in the Sebago Lakes Region, a compound for your extended family or a primary residence for you to enjoy year round.
