Washington Pond covers 551 acres and has a maximum depth of 36 feet. The pond forms the headwater of the Medomak River. Fantastic fishing is provided by the principal fisheries of brown trout, smallmouth bass, white perch and chain pickerel. You’ll find a carry-in only boat launch on Route 105 at the southern end of the pond, between Billings Lane and Old Townhouse Road.As you kayak along Washington Pond, watch for rocks; some are submerged, but on others look for turtles sunning themselves. Or look up and you might catch a glimpse of the resident bald eagle. And you won’t want to miss the spectacular sunrises and sunsets.
Washington is a quirky little town consisting of a village store, library and church. It’s one of those places where “everybody knows your name.” With a wee bit of hunting, you can locate a few hidden treasures tucked away in the rolling hills around town. The Labyrinth, is one such treasure. Artist Carol Sloane has created a labyrinth in the pattern of Robin Hood’s Race, which winds its way through woods and a hayfield. Contemporary painters, mixed-media artists, printmakers and sculptors all showcase their work at the Downtown Gallery. And the Washington Grange Farmers’ Market offers a place to purchase local produce directly from farmers and craftspeople. It’s open seasonally across the street from the library. At Sweet Season Farm you can pick berries, relish an ice cream cone on a hot summer afternoon or dine in the cafe, which serves hearty local food.
Washington is also within easy reach of amenities in Augusta, as well as the buzzing seaside communities of Rockland, Rockport and Camden.
Need time to read and relax? A place where you can see the stars at night because there are no lights? And the only nighttime sounds are the cries of the loons and the rustling pine boughs?
