Pocasset Lake in Wayne, Maine, Will Lure You to Spend Time at the Lake

Fall Reflection on Pocasset Lake in Wayne, Maine
Purchase lakefront property on Pocasset Lake in Wayne, Maine, and you can enjoy the small town feel of the village. Wayne is a quintessential New England village with two churches, a library, general store and specialty shops on Main Street. It is one of the prettiest villages in Maine. Set on the northwest shoreline of Androscoggin Lake and south of Pocasset Lake, some describe it as an “Interlachen” village.
It is said of Pocasset that “he who comes once to the lake, invariably comes again.” The lake has a surface cover of 605 acres, with a maximum depth of 20 feet and a mean depth of 16 feet. The water quality is above average.

The Androscoggin Yacht Club was formed in 1909 and is one of the oldest in the United States. Folks don’t need to own a boat to join the yacht club, which offers a beach and many social programs. The club was incorporated for the “promotion of the yachting and boating on the waters of Lakes Androscoggin and Pocasset, protection and preservation of the fishes and game on the waters thereof and care and improvement of the shores of said lakes.”The principal fisheries are smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, yellow perch and chain pickerel. Plentiful fishing cover or structure is provided by docks, coves, ledges and brush along the shoreline.

We all love dragonflies and damselflies because they love to feed on mosquitoes. Rob Butler and Sherry Hooker reported the following in a 2000 Pocasset Lake Association newsletter: “At present, Milliken’s Cove is the only known breeding site in the state for a small, blue-and-black damselfly known as the Dusky Dancer (Argia translata). This species had never been documented breeding farther north than Massachusetts prior to 1999. In July of 2000, we also discovered a breeding population of small red damselflies known as the Scarlet Bluets (Enallagma pictum) in the cove. This species has only been reported in four other locations in the entire state! Clearly Pocasset Lake is unique in ways many of us have not even considered.”Quiet roads skirt the shores of Pocasset and provide for a delightful bicycle ride around the perimeter. Or if you are up for an ambitious paddle, canoe or kayak the 15-mile route from Minnehonk Lake in Mount Vernon to Pocasset Lake, traveling through many of the lakes that form the “30 Mile River.”
No vacation at your waterfront property on Pocasset will be complete without trips to Tubby’s Ice Cream, which serves not only good ice cream, but fine lobstah rolls and stew as well. And the Wayne General Store offers everything you could possibly need. It’s been open for over 100 years. Also on Main Street is the Cary Memorial Library, named for Wayne native Annie Louise Cary, America’s first operatic prima donna.
Pocasset Lake is located 20 miles from Augusta and only 15 minutes from The Theater at Monmouth.
