Naples, Maine Causeway Construction Schedule Posted; Big Change Coming to Maine’s Sebago Lakes Region

The construction project that will eliminate the old swing bridge that connects the Naples, Maine Causeway between Long Lake and Brandy Pond and replace it with a permanent span has begun.

For years, the swing bridge has halted traffic while allowing watercraft of all shapes and sizes to pass between Long Lake and Brandy Pond. Now, a new bridge construction project has begun that will allow most boats and all vehicular traffic to proceed unabated in either direction, day and night, every day of the year.

While the debate over the bridge has, at times, been contentious, now that the project has finally been decided upon and begun, all eyes are on its progress and eventual completion and discussion is more focused on what the end result will be. Here is the proposed construction schedule as it has been recently published:

Award Project - Sept. 9, 2010

Mobilization – Sept. 2010 to Oct. 2010

Drainage on East Approach – Oct. 2010 to Jan.  2011

Drainage on Causeway – Oct. 2010 to Jan. 2011

Installing Sheet Piles on Causeway Bulkhead – Nov. 2010 to March 2011

Building Abutment #2 and Retaining Walls – Dec. 2010 to Nov. 2011

Backfilling Sheet Pile Wall – Jan. 2011 to April 2011

Constructing Docks – March 2011 to May 2011

Rebuilding Roadway, East Approach – April 2011 tp May 2011

Setting Curb, Building Sidewalks – May 2011 to August 2011

Installing Sheet Piles on Causeway Bulkhead – Nov. 2010 to March 2011 – June 2011 to July 2011

Backfilling Sheet Pile Wall – Jone 2011 to July 2011

Close Old Bridge to Boat Traffic – September 15, 2011

Building Abutment #1 and Ret. Walls – Oct. 2011 to Feb. 2012

Building Arch – Feb 2012 to May 2012

Construct and Pave Approaches – April 2012 to May 2012

OPEN NEW BRIDGE TO TWO WAY TRAFFIC – May 15, 2012

After the opening of the new bridge to two way traffic, construction and deconstruction will continue. The old swing bridge will be dismantled and boat traffic will commence by Memorial Day 2012. Paving will be completed throughout the summer of 2012 as well as plantings and landscaping, and general cleanup. The project will come to full completion on May 15, 2013.

For those of you travelling this route over the next two years, please be patient. We all hope the end result will be worth the wait, giving us better traffic flow for car and boat alike, while beautifying the Causeway overall.

Will they finally be putting a light in at the intersection of 114 and 302???

4/12: They added a left turn lane to RT 302 north and widened RT 114 at the intersection. It looks like Naples will remain a 1 traffic light town.

I love the sidewalks on the new causway. Do you know if that is clay or stamped cement?

4/12: Stamped Concrete. The new bridge looks great. It will be interesting driving over it starting in May 2012.

This article was very helpful regarding the bridge timeline. Does anyone know if the bridge project is on running on schedule for two way traffic as of May 15, 2012?

4/12: Saw a pontoon boat traveling under the old and new bridges last week. The grand-opening is scheduled for 5/18. The swing bridge will then be dismantled before Memorial Day. Water traffic while not officially open, should be possible now through 5/18. Water traffic will not be possible while the swing bridge is removed.

It looks like two way traffic over the bridge on pavement will be on schedule. The guard rails for the bridge are being installed now. The Long Lake side looks like the sidewalk could be installed before 5/18. The Brandy Pond side looks like there is some more retaining wall work that needs the old bridge closed before they complete that side of the bridge.
