This is more than just a boat show. It’s a keels and wheels event because in addition to the wooden and classic antique boats on display, classic cars are expected. Under the warm sun and blue sky you can amble along the Causeway to view the antique skiffs, launches and classic runabouts as well as the cars. The fine craftsmanship of a vintage boat along with the aura of a time gone by and the camaraderie of the folks who share an interest in preserving the past is evident in this event. Wooden boats have graced the Lakes Region for many years. With sleek, smooth lines, detailed handiwork and the extraordinary glow of mahogany, they offer unique beauty from bow to stern.
Thanks to the Mountainview Woodies Classic Boat Club, we can actually spend a few days enjoying the beauty of these classics. On the Tuesday prior to the show, the club will offer afternoon rides for campers at Camp Sunshine on Sebago Lake, a retreat at Point Sebago for children and families dealing with major health issues. On Wednesday, the boats will cruise up Long Lake to Harrison for lunch at the Village Tie-Up. On Thursday, they’ll meet on Sebago Lake for a lunch excursion to Migis Lodge. And a favorite for many locals and visitors is the 4:30 p.m. boat parade on Friday. The boats queue up on Brandy Pond, then travel under the bridge into Long Lake. They’ll make two loops in front of the Causeway and then line up and at the drop of a flag everyone will take off at once. It’s an amazing site to behold. A club dinner will follow at Freedom Cafe.
The actual boat show on Saturday will take place at the new docks the club built at the Naples Town Landing on the Causeway. Jeff Murdock, club president, wrote in an e-mail, “The new docks will give the club more tie-up place for our boats and allow the town more dock space for the summer boating season.”
If you are interested in learning more about Mountainview Woodies Classic Boat Club, chat with some folks at the dock, watch for their fall foliage cruise the first weekend of October, or attend a monthly meeting at Freedom Cafe.
In between events of the boat show, make time to look at some lakefront properties so you can enjoy the view year round. Click on the green box above to learn more about waterfront properties available in Naples.
